Victoria By-the-Sea

Enchanting Victoria By-the-Sea

Enchanting Victoria By-the-Sea will woo you with its charming colourful painted homes, some even with widow walks reminding you of its seafaring history. This storybook coastal village has good food, artists and artisans galore and a beautiful coastline. There’s a mystical draw here for all who visit. Stop, eat, stay and play.

Pretty as a Postcard

Victoria-By-the-Sea is nestled on Prince Edward Island’s ‘Red Sands’ southern shore, between Charlottetown and Summerside. I discovered this pretty-as-a-postcard village back in 2006, and I return whenever I get an opportunity.

Candlemaker

In 2006, candlemaker Ben Smith, and his candle shop, were featured on the cover of the PEI Tourism Guide with an accompanying article inside. After reading it, I knew I had to find Ben and this village he was so enamoured with. It led me to what has become my favourite hidden gem on the island. This older gentleman is passionate about candle making and life in Victoria. He also has a few stories to tell. Just ask him about the special chair in his shop.

Treasured Memory

The blue candle Ben is working on in the featured photo above, was created just for me. Ben has now passed the baton to his daughter as the master candlemaker in the family, but he still adds his finishing touches to the top. “It's not nearly complete without this,” he told me. Together they create these beautiful one-of-a-kind candles. Ben explained that “hot wax is fused with red sand from the nearby Victoria shore, and then a pattern is hand-carved into the sides.” I love the waves motif, but there are plenty of other popular designs to choose from. Many couples order personalized wedding or anniversary candles with their names (or initials) along with their special date carved in. Ben ships his candles all over the world. Each one is unique and a treasured memory of the island. 💙

One of the Oldest Lighthouses on PEI

Across from Ben's candle shop is the Victoria Seaport Lighthouse, built in 1879. It is the second oldest lighthouse on the island. Steeped in history, Victoria was once one of PEI's busiest seaports with schooners and steamboats making regular visits. Discover more of Victoria's history in the Seaport Museum located inside this operating lighthouse. Ben advised me to walk the entrance ramp slowly to let the aroma of the nearby wild roses welcome me. He was right - do take time to smell the roses.

Coach House Antiques

Coach House Antiques carries a fine collection of antique and vintage items including china, crystal, quality furniture, Persian rugs, paintings, and lovely old books. I often find myself swept up in poetry books or lose myself rereading pages from vintage copies of Anne of Green Gables, by the island's own Lucy Maud Montgomery.

Artists & Artisans

Wander in and out of the local art and artisan shops all over Victoria to find keepsake treasures. Local potter, Michael Stanley, shared with me that the talented group work all winter long to prepare for the bustling spring to fall months. Visit each and every shop to see their beautiful wares.

Island Chocolates

Chocolate lovers be forewarned ~ you are going to love this place!  Stop into Island Chocolates for delicious hand-made chocolates with a locally roasted coffee or specialty tea and dessert on the deck.  Trust me and try the special “Factory Coffee” ~ a warm Belgian chocolate-lined glass, with freshly brewed coffee, topped with real whipped cream. It’s a whole lot of YUM!

The Grand Victorian

Looking for the perfect wedding venue? Your prayers are answered! Built in 1877, this Gothic Revival church spent many years in its former life. However, in 2016 it went up for sale and was reincarnated as The Grand Victorian, a boutique wedding and special events venue. What a heavenly enchanting “blessed’ place for a full-service wedding, don’t you think?!

Victoria Playhouse

Holding the honour of PEI's longest running little theatre, the Victoria Playhouse Theatre is a favourite among local Islanders and visitors alike. The typical annual Summer Theatre Festival features comedy, drama, musical concerts, and storytelling events. See village link at end of article for more information on current shows/events.

Victoria

Walk slowly and carry a camera. Victoria is a photographer’s dream. Then drive around the nearby country roads to discover fields of canola, lupines, or potato blossoms.  Stop at a local farm to pick berries or wildflowers. Go to the beach to collect seashells or sea glass or simply catch a sunset. Be forewarned: Victoria By-the-Sea will cast its spell on you.

The Lobster Barn

The Lobster Barn Pub & Eatery, makes, what my husband Eric and I believe to be, the best lobster roll on the island. It is tops with us. The lobster mango salad is yummy, too.

Landmark Oyster House

The Landmark Oyster House is located across from the Victoria Playhouse Theatre. You can count on the freshest local products, a happening atmosphere and a beautiful culinary experience. They are also oyster shucking experts! So much deliciousness here.

Eat-in or Take-out

There are more options for dining in Victoria but we were only in town for a couple of days. So please check with locals, or go online for further information regarding the current status of village eateries. I also suggest Travelocity for reviews from other travellers as well.

By-the-Sea Kayaking

For the adventure enthusiasts, there are many outdoor activities to enjoy in Victoria. If you don’t have your own equipment, By-the-Sea Kayaking has rentals available including standing paddle boards, bicycles, as well as one and two-seater kayaks. Ask about their clam digging tours too. Find By-the-Sea Kayaking conveniently located next to the beach.

A Special Place

This is a special place with lots to see and do. There are cafes & pubs, antique shops & art galleries, live theatre, a lighthouse & seafaring museum, a great wharf, and a beach. Meet the locals and wander about, and don’t forget to stop and see Ben. Ask about that chair and perhaps pick up a special PEI sand candle. You will treasure it, and your time spent making memories in enchanting Victoria By-The-Sea.
