Saint John City Market
No holiday visit to Saint John is complete without a stop at the Saint John City Market, Canada’s oldest continuously operated farmer’s market, with roots dating back to 1785. Housed in a Second Empire-style building from 1876, this National Historic Site buzzes with activity year-round, offering fresh produce, meats, seafood, handmade crafts, and during the holidays, an extra sprinkle of festive cheer.
Described as the city’s beating heart, the market is the perfect starting point for your holiday tour. Wander among the butchers, bakers, and candle-stick makers, soak in the vibrant atmosphere, and delight in the aromas of diverse culinary aromas wafting through the aisles. During the festive season, many booths add a special holiday touch, making your visit even more magical. And if you’re feeling celebratory, stop by Uncorked Tours onsite for a wine tasting. The Saint John City Market is located at 47 Charlotte Street in uptown Saint John and is open Monday to Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Italian By Night
With so many fantastic restaurants in uptown Saint John, choosing where to dine can be a challenge. But on our first evening, Italian By Night (97 Germain St.) was calling our names. I savored the Scoglio, a seafood dish bursting with ocean-fresh flavours, perfectly complemented by house-made pasta, rosemary focaccia, and a chilled Italian Pinot Grigio. My friend Cindy enjoyed the same dish, customized to be entirely gluten-free—a testament to the restaurant’s thoughtful approach to dining.
After dinner, we made our way to the Delta Saint John, our cozy retreat for the weekend. Located in the heart of uptown, the Delta is a favourite for its unbeatable location. Once we parked, we knew we could easily walk to every destination on our holiday itinerary the next day, no matter the forecast. With snow beginning to fall, we were glad to have arrived early, settling in late Thursday afternoon to get a head start on a weekend filled with great food and memorable moments.

Hopscotch Whisky Bar: Cocktails, Whisky, and Divine Dining
Friday night started with pre-show cocktails and dinner at Hopscotch Bar (47 Canterbury St.), a cozy, and yet sophisticated whisky bar nestled in the heart of uptown Saint John. Renowned for its impressive whisky selection and expertly crafted cocktails, the bar has recently expanded its space, making it an even sweeter spot to unwind.
The warm, welcoming atmosphere is perfectly complemented by a curated food menu that truly delivers. A special thanks to our server, Jason, who went above and beyond to help my friend Cindy navigate the gluten-free options. She savoured the Cornish Hen, while I indulged in the Saffron Squash Risotto—both dishes were absolutely divine.
Whether you’re a whisky aficionado, a cocktail enthusiast, or simply seeking an exceptional dining experience, Hopscotch Bar is a must-visit during your time in Saint John!
Imperial Theatre: A Night of Pure Imagination
Our golden tickets to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory at the stunning Imperial Theatre delivered an unforgettable evening. This historic jewel box set the stage for a magical retelling of Roald Dahl’s timeless classic, brought to life by the Saint John Theatre Company.
The production exceeded every expectation, with vibrant acting, powerful singing, energetic dancing, and a whimsically delicious set and costume design. A standout performance by Grade 5 student Joshua Burnbaum as Charlie Bucket left us completely in awe. Whether you’re a lifelong fan of Willy Wonka or stepping into this magical world for the first time, the show was a must-see for all ages.
Every holiday season, the Imperial Theatre offers a lineup of special family performances that transport audiences into dreamlike worlds filled with laughter, fun, and pure entertainment. Be sure to check their box office for upcoming shows and secure your own golden tickets to an experience that’s sure to dazzle!
There’s a Feeling of Christmas
The magic of Christmas was in the air as we strolled through uptown Saint John, turning an ordinary walk to dinner and the theatre into an enchanting experience. Festive décor, sparkling lights, and stunning window displays greeted us around every corner. At one point, giant bubbles floated before us, intriguingly leading us to a young man creating them simply to spread joy. We couldn’t help but laugh when a tiny dog and its owner paused as one floated by them, unsure what to make of it all.
Special shoutouts to The Urban Shoe Myth (78 King St.) for their breathtaking window displays, Thandi Restaurant (33 Canterbury St.) for its elegant holiday décor, and Keirstead’s Flower Shop (143 Charlotte St.) for their delightful animated and musical Santa window. King’s Square, beautifully illuminated by city elves, left us spinning in amazement after the show when cutting through the park as we made our way back to the hotel.
Adding to the charm was the Gingerbread Trail with creative gingerbread houses popping up in windows and displays. These intricate creations, tucked into unexpected corners, made every step through the heart of the city feel like a festive treasure hunt. Uptown Saint John truly sparkles during the holidays, making it a must-visit destination for a dose of seasonal magic. So much so, that they even have an event the first weekend in December called Uptown Sparkles. It is the ultimate way to celebrate the season and experience the wonder of winter in uptown Saint John!
Christmas in the Barn: A Holiday Market Worth the Drive
Holiday markets abound in Saint John and the Towns by the Bay, so the next day, Cindy and I set out on a regional festive adventure. Our first stop was Hampton, a picturesque town just a short half-hour drive away. After a quick peek and scenic loop around the charming town square, we made our way to Christmas at the Barn in nearby Bloomfield, located just 10 minutes away.
The Barn in Bloomfield (569 Rte 121), owned by Brent Rourke, is a destination worth visiting year-round, but during this special market, it transforms into a bustling hub of holiday creativity. The space comes alive with talented artists, artisans, and makers showcasing their beautiful handiwork. Among the highlights were Brent Rourke’s finely handcrafted wood products, the vibrant fused glass poppy creations by Bluemerle Glass Studio, and the fantastical old-world soft wool sculptures by self-taught artist Bella McBride. These treasures were just a glimpse of what Christmas at the Barn had to offer—a festive celebration of local craftsmanship and creativity that left us inspired and delighted.
Kredl’s Craft Fair: A Holiday Must-Visit in Hampton
A visit to Kredl’s Corner Market (1171 Main Street) in Hampton is a treat any time of year, but it becomes truly magical during the holidays when it hosts its festive Craft Fair. Established in 1980, Kredl’s has grown into a beloved hub for local farm products, offering everything from fresh fruits and vegetables to meats, maple syrup, local preserves, honey, and more.
In the weeks leading up to Christmas, Kredl’s takes holiday preparations to the next level. Their Holiday Turkey Boxes, packed with everything you need for a festive dinner, and their mouthwatering holiday baking will ensure your celebrations are delicious and stress-free. You can even pick up your Christmas tree and wreaths from the nursery, making it a one-stop shop for all your seasonal needs.
During Craft Market days, the greenhouses transform into a gallery of unique handmade crafts and gifts, delectable treats, and festive holiday finds. Whether you’re shopping for the perfect gift, stocking up on holiday essentials, or simply soaking in the festive atmosphere, Kredl’s is a must-visit destination for holiday cheer.
European Christmas at Belding Hill Farms: A Fairytale Holiday Experience
The Outdoor European-Style Christmas Market at Belding Hill Farms (404 Ravine Road, Hampton) had been on my holiday wish list for the past few years, and it more than lived up to the hype. The property is straight out of a fairytale, with its charming barns, twinkling lights, and a storybook atmosphere.
The experience is pure magic. Wander through the barns to meet the friendly farm animals and family pets, then browse the booths of talented local artists, artisans, and craftspeople. The market captures the true spirit of a European Christmas—rooted in community, connection, and festive cheer.
A special highlight is Santa and Mrs. Claus, who roam the grounds spreading joy and happily posing for photos (no charge!). I highly recommend visiting the market during the day to soak in the scenic charm and again at night, when the farm glows with sparkling lights and a warm ambiance. The evening crowd buzzes with holiday spirit, making it the perfect setting to eat, drink, and be merry! Enjoy the photos from my visits—hours apart, yet equally magical. This is one holiday tradition you won’t want to miss. Admission is $10 plus tax ($11.50) for anyone 7 years old or older.
Station 33 Café: Cozy, Delicious, and Totally Zen
Our lunch stop was the delightful Station 33 Café and Yoga, a licensed café that combines cozy vibes with a commitment to local ingredients, sustainability, community, and wellness. This welcoming spot serves up locally roasted coffee, homemade baked goods, and delicious food—all in an atmosphere that practically invites you to curl up and stay awhile.
The café’s charm is undeniable. With its relaxed ambiance and a yoga studio upstairs, it’s the kind of place where you can feel the stress melt away. I first fell under its spell a couple of years ago and make a point to visit whenever I’m in the area. There’s something so inviting about the space—it wouldn’t feel out of place if Phoebe from Friends strolled in, picked up the guitar on the back wall, and started serenading everyone.
While everything on the menu is worth trying, the Peanut Butter Latté is a must—it’s pure bliss in a cup. Whether you’re stopping by for a quick bite or settling in for an afternoon of zen, Station 33 Café is the perfect spot to refuel, recharge, and savour the moment.
Artisan Market & Letters to Santa: A Winter Wonderland Highlight
As part of Hampton’s Winter Wonderland festivities, an Artisan Market was set up in the adjoining spillover room at Station 33 Café. The space buzzed with creativity and holiday cheer as I browsed through vintage clothing, admired the elegant craftsmanship of Jade Müller Pottery, and caught up with my friend Dee from Little Forest Farm Apothecary, who offers natural skincare and herbal products.
I also had the pleasure of meeting Denise McLean, whose fascinating Living Art explores the beauty of trees, and Cynthia Liberty of Minou Hibou Crochet, whose retro-inspired crocheted creations were a delightful surprise. Each booth was brimming with unique treasures and the talent of passionate local artisans.
While shopping, I met Rae Lynn and her sister Georgia, who had just finished writing their letters to Santa. Their excitement was contagious as they eagerly awaited their chance to hand-deliver the letters when Santa arrived in the town square later that day. Moments like this perfectly captured the magic and community spirit of Hampton’s Winter Wonderland.
Kings County Museum Christmas Tea: A Delightful Step Back in Time
Cindy and I enjoyed a lovely afternoon Christmas Tea at the Kings County Museum, complete with sweets, sandwiches, and festive charm. Live guitar music and a display of Victorian clothing added to the ambiance, while we chatted with our friendly tablemates, Serena Henderson and Mary McKay Keith. Cindy’s dietary needs were easily met with several gluten-free options available, making the visit all the more enjoyable. After tea, we explored exhibits, including a captivating replica dollhouse of a local home adorned with exact miniature furnishings. It was a delightful experience, and I look forward to returning to uncover more local history.
Winter Wonderland in Hampton: A Hallmark Holiday Come to Life
I fell in love with Hampton a few years ago, enchanted by its pristine town square that feels as if it belongs in a Hallmark movie. During the holidays, this picturesque town transforms into a magical Winter Wonderland, overflowing with festive charm and community spirit.
Santa’s Grand Arrival
On Saturday evening, Hampton’s town square came alive as families gathered for the day’s highlight: Santa’s grand arrival. Children explored the darling miniature town structures scattered throughout the park—each one a lovingly handcrafted creation by the town’s park staff, with a new addition unveiled every year. As dusk settled, the buildings lit up, casting a warm glow over the gathering. The air was filled with the comforting aroma of hot chocolate, the cheerful voices of carollers, and the sound of children’s laughter.
Then came the moment everyone was waiting for. A distant siren grew louder and louder, signaling Santa’s much-anticipated arrival aboard the Hampton Fire Rescue Truck. Children squealed with delight, their faces lighting up as Santa climbed down to greet them. They eagerly lined up, clutching their wish lists, ready to share their dreams. The entire scene radiated holiday magic, capturing the essence of joy and wonder that makes the season so special.
Holiday Magic Comes Alive
But the magic didn’t stop there. Hampton’s Winter Wonderland offered much more than Santa’s visit. Festive markets brimmed with unique treasures, and holiday activities brought neighbours together in celebration. A donation truck bed was filled with non-perishable food and a wreath auction raised funds for the Hampton Food Basket, exemplifying the community’s generosity. Even with challenges like a postal strike, the town’s resourceful “elves” ensured every child’s letter to Santa would receive a reply—a thoughtful touch that reflects the town’s dedication to preserving the spirit of the holidays.
Hampton’s Winter Wonderland is more than an event—it’s a celebration of community, tradition, and holiday joy. From glowing lights to heartfelt moments, this charming town offers a festive escape that stays with you long after the season has passed. If you’re searching for a place where holiday magic comes alive, Hampton, New Brunswick, is calling your name. It’s a holiday experience not to be missed. Even the twinkling lights seemed to whisper of a community deeply invested in spreading holiday cheer.
Beer Daddy BBQ: A Southern-Style Feast
After our evening visit to Belding Hill Farms’ European Christmas Market, Cindy and I followed the dinner bell to Beer Daddy BBQ for an mouthwatering southern BBQ feast. From tender brisket and smoky ribs to all the classic fixin’s, every bite was a celebration of low-and-slow-cooked perfection.
The experience was made even better by meeting the entrepreneurial duo behind it, Corey and Cailin Richard, whose passion for BBQ is as evident as their warm Maritime hospitality. Excitingly, Beer Daddy BBQ is teaming up with Gridiron Brewing and Ole Foggy Distillery to create a destination for foodies seeking incredible BBQ paired with the perfect local brew or spirit. With its cozy atmosphere and genuine charm, Beer Daddy BBQ is the kind of place where you leave with a full belly and a happy heart. I can’t wait to bring my husband next time we’re in the area. Whether you’re a local or just passing through, this is a must-visit spot.
Holiday Dreamland: A Sparkling Finale
Before heading back to Saint John for the night, Cindy and I made one final stop at Quispamsis Arts and Culture Park to immerse ourselves in Holiday Dreamland, a breathtaking celebration of light and joy. This dazzling display features over 50,000 LED lights, transforming the park into a glowing paradise.
Visitors can expect towering light-covered trees, a whimsical gingerbread house, a magical train display, and even a sparkling zoo—all designed to ignite the festive spirit. The lights shine brightly every evening from dusk to 10 p.m., creating the perfect backdrop for holiday memories. With its vibrant energy and enchanting atmosphere, Holiday Dreamland was the perfect way to close out our Holiday Baycation—a moment of pure seasonal magic that I’ll treasure for years to come.
