Down East Hospitality

Natasha and Larry were both born East Coasters, but met while living away. They fell in love with each other and with the idea of one day returning back home. Their East Coast roots are strong. Natasha’s parents are from Newfoundland and Larry’s from Nova Scotia. Natasha was born in NB, but grew up in NL. Larry was born in PEI, but grew up in NB. "It's time to go Down East," they would say, when they visited family. Natasha was captivated by a yellow house at 125 Pleasant Street during visits to Larry’s family. She would beg Larry to “please drive by my yellow house.” Over the years Natasha’s dream of owning a bed and breakfast became Larry’s, too. Eventually, they followed their hearts back east and discovered their dream house was for sale. They bought it, and named it: Down East Comfort Bed and Breakfast. Since 2020, they have welcomed guests to themed suites representing New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island, with plans to add a Newfoundland and Labrador suite in the future. Sharing their dream house and providing comfort to guests is their mission. Natasha and Larry invite you to visit and experience their dream, offering warm Down East hospitality at Down East Comfort Bed and Breakfast.

Miramichi’s Finest

Down East Comfort B & B is a gem nestled among Miramichi’s finest Queen Anne style homes. Built in 1903 by wood merchant Mr. John Miller, this early 20th-century home was once the residence of the well-known Creaghan family for several generations. The previous owners undertook extensive restoration, reviving this historic property to its former glory. The Fultons have added their own unique touches and enjoy sharing it with guests as Down East Comfort Bed and Breakfast. The home boasts many exquisite features, including beautiful oak inlaid hardwood floors, stained glass windows, a brass lamppost stairway, an original fireplace with cast iron panels, high ceilings with intricate moldings and cornices, and a living room chandelier from the Legislature Assembly Building in Fredericton. Notably, it was the first home in Newcastle to have electricity. Be sure to ask Natasha or Larry to show you this special light fixture!

Nova Scotia Suite

Located on the north-facing side of the second floor, the Nova Scotia Suite is a large, bright, and relaxing retreat. This spacious suite features a king-size bed and a loveseat sofa bed, extending the occupancy to four. A dining table for two doubles as a convenient workstation. Additional amenities include a 32” TV, a closet, and a private ensuite with both a shower and a charming clawfoot tub.

Prince Edward Island Suite

Nestled in the square turret at the northeast corner, the cozy Prince Edward Island Suite offers a comfortable Queen-size bed and a twin daybed, accommodating up to three guests. The suite boasts an electric fireplace, a 32” TV, and a private ensuite with a standup shower.

New Brunswick Suite

Perfect for a romantic escape, the New Brunswick Suite is located on the second floor's southwest side, with views of the front and side of the property. This suite, the largest at Down East Comfort B&B, occupies the entire side of the second floor and is situated in the round turret. It features a dreamy king-size four-poster bed, a loveseat, and a dining table for two that can also serve as a workstation. Enjoy the added luxury of a 42” TV, a walk-in closet, and a private ensuite with a bidet, shower, and elegant clawfoot tub. My husband Eric and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this beautiful suite.

Down East Comfort Breakfast

Down East Comfort offers gourmet breakfasts inspired by East Coast foods like smoked salmon, fish cakes, and homemade beans. Guests choose from daily selections served in the dining room or in-room upon request. Natasha and Larry customize breakfasts to accommodate allergies and dietary needs. Eric and I began our first breakfast with fresh juice, coffee, and a fruit and yogurt parfait, followed by scrumptious warm waffles topped with fresh berries, whipped cream, and maple syrup. There were also tempting pastries, but we were happily stuffed. The next morning, we enjoyed juice, coffee, and a parfait, followed by tasty Traditional Eggs Benedict for Eric and yummy Smoked Salmon Eggs Benny for me, with bacon-wrapped broccoli and mini potatoes. Freshly baked croissants topped with local Chocolat Voyageur shavings were offered, and Natasha’s dad kindly wrapped them for our drive home. It was a delightful treat a few hours later.

It’s the Little Things at Down East Comfort B & B

It’s the little things at Down East Comfort B & B. Extra amenities abound in the suites, ensuring top-notch service. From custom room keys and welcoming local treats like Cake a Chance cupcakes and Chocolate Voyageur chocolates, to quality bedding and towels, private refrigerators, and thoughtful offerings just in case you might have forgotten something. Attention to detail makes all the difference and every touch feels personalized. Upstairs, there is a comfortable seating area, convenient coffee & tea station, a refillable water station, a “Date with a Book” basket, and a selection of evening snacks.

Natasha's mom created and gifted Natasha the cross-stitch provincial tartans, displayed in the main guest area, and a custom painting by Catherine Karnes Munn adds a special touch. The verandah, with its plants and cozy seating, was a favourite evening spot for us. Thoughtful gestures, like pre-stamped postcards and keepsake provincial tartan mug mats, create lasting memories. Natasha’s parents, Ivan and Joanne, were delightful. Ivan’s fun-loving spirit and Joanne’s graciousness enhance the experience. Natasha has been grateful for their support. The pride in Natasha’s parents’ eyes when sharing guest stories shows how much they cherish their role. Together, this family has crafted a truly special place at Down East Comfort B & B.

Hennessy’s Pub

Natasha and Larry suggested some great local businesses within walking distance for good food and drink. We enjoyed a tasty lunch at Hennessy’s Pub, an eatery with a large waterfront outdoor patio. They specialize in house-made pub flair offerings with heaps of sides to select from, and they serve cocktails, wine, local craft beer on tap. It is a fun atmosphere, featuring local entertainment on weekends.

Apéro Lounge

We also enjoyed cocktails and a share plate at Apéro Lounge. Again, just a convenient, easy walk from Down East Comfort B & B and a nice outing for late afternoons or early evenings. A sophisticated bar front with a cozy patio out back makes for a relaxed spot to enjoy a light bite and drink. They serve a variety of cocktails, wine, and local craft beer. An added bonus, if you are looking for a more substantial fare, is a delivery service from Apéro’s Mobile Kitchen for tacos, gourmet burgers, and more. We just opted for a cheese plate and cocktails but next time, we hope to try out this option.

Character Matters Miramichi

I had the pleasure of experiencing a Character Matters Miramichi tour while staying at Down East Comfort B & B, and I highly recommend it. Step into history with Thomas Daley and Shawn McCarthy as they bring the hidden stories of Downtown Newcastle to life. These talented actors depict historical characters, sharing their prominent places in local history as you explore heritage buildings, monuments, and the Town Square. It's an interactive history lesson with a side of entertainment—a journey through time! They offer several heritage tours, including scenic Nelson, Historic Chatham, Lower (Douglas) Town, and the captivating Dare the Dark - Headless Nun Experience. This last one is high on my list, where you can learn about a local legend and test your bravery trekking through the eerie woods of French Fort Cove. Do you dare?

Book your stay at Down East Comfort B & B

Service was exceptional and the rooms were impeccable at Down East Comfort B & B. Enjoy pampering with a side of good ol’ maritime hospitality—you won't be disappointed. On our last morning, Eric and I met a woman who travels from Halifax to stay here monthly while visiting her mom in a nearby nursing home. She wouldn’t consider staying anywhere else, even waiting for an available room if necessary. Many guests feel the same, adapting their plans to stay here. "That makes us feel pretty good," said Natasha's dad. After our stay, I understand why only Down East Comfort B & B will do. I'm already planning a girls' trip this fall to take over the Inn. Stay tuned! Celebrate a special occasion here—Natasha and Larry offer honeymoon and anniversary packages, fishing packages, and a military discount in honour of Larry's dad, who served in the Air Force. Book your stay at Down East Comfort B & B and tell Natasha & Larry the Maritimes Maven sent you.
